Paris Saint-Germain sporting director Luis Campos has revealed that head coach Luis Enrique was very close to leaving the Parisian club before the historic season just gone, in which PSG won four trophies.
Last season, the Parisians triumphed in all major competitions, including the Champions League and Ligue 1, marking one of the most successful campaigns in the club’s history.
However, according to Campos, things could have taken a very different direction. In an interview with Marca, he explained that Luis Enrique set very clear conditions in order to continue his project in Paris.
“At the end of his first season, he told me: ‘Luis, either we raise the level of daily training, with players who are at their maximum level of fitness, or I’m leaving,’” Campos stated.
He added that this demand completely changed the club’s approach to squad building and transfer policy.
“Today, when I want to sign a player we are interested in, the first thing I tell him is: we know your qualities very well, but if you don’t train every day at the highest level, you can forget about playing even a single minute. That’s the truth,” Campos concluded.
These standards set by Luis Enrique proved decisive in PSG’s historic success last season.
