Is Neymar leaving Brazil in a sensational transfer?

American soccer club FC Cincinnati has shown interest in bringing Brazilian star Neymar from Santos, where he currently plays.

According to ESPN, the MLS club has contacted representatives of the 34-year-old forward to explore the possibility of a transfer. Sources say the Ohio-based club’s inquiry aimed to assess Neymar’s interest in joining MLS, as well as the financial terms required to complete a deal. Neymar signed a contract extension with Santos in January, tying him to the Brazilian club until the end of 2026.

Decision after the World Cup
A final decision about his future is expected after the 2026 FIFA World Cup, which will take place in the United States, Canada, and Mexico in June and July. Although Neymar has not played for Brazil since October 2023, he hopes to return to the national team for that tournament.

Neymar has been sidelined in recent weeks due to a knee injury, limiting him to just six appearances for Santos this year. His club coach confirmed on Tuesday that Neymar underwent a minor knee procedure during the international break to be “ready for action” ahead of the World Cup.

Physical fitness remains a key requirement for his return to the national team, as Brazil coach Carlo Ancelotti previously stated he would rely on Neymar for the World Cup only if he is fully fit. During the last international break, Brazil lost 2–1 to France and defeated Croatia 3–1.

A successful club from Cincinnati
FC Cincinnati has established itself as one of the top teams in MLS over the past three seasons. Since joining the league in 2016, they have won the MLS Supporters’ Shield twice for having the best regular-season record, most recently in 2023.

They finished second in the league last season and reached the playoff quarterfinals, and have also appeared in the CONCACAF Champions Cup for two consecutive seasons.

During his illustrious career, the former star of FC Barcelona and Paris Saint-Germain has scored 374 goals in 625 club appearances. With 79 goals in 128 matches, he is also the all-time top scorer for the Brazilian national team.
