José Mourinho’s Benfica caused a major surprise in the Champions League by defeating Real Madrid 4–2 at the Estádio da Luz.
Despite the defeat, all the attention was on Kylian Mbappé, who made history on the European night.
The French forward scored two goals, taking his tally to 13 goals in just six Champions League matches this season and breaking Cristiano Ronaldo’s record for the most goals in the opening phase of the tournament. CR7 had previously scored 11 goals by the end of the group stage.
In doing so, Mbappé became the only player to reach this figure at this stage of the competition.
His extraordinary form also continues in La Liga, where he leads the scoring charts with 21 goals in 20 matches, confirming a spectacular season despite Real Madrid’s disappointment in Lisbon.
