Poem by William Butler Yeats

Never Give Your Heart Completely

Never give your heart completely to anyone,
for passionate women see love as easy,
unworthy of care, when security they have,
and they don’t change, keep it not in mind,
for from kiss to kiss, a weakness it seizes;
everything beautiful is just a fleeting pleasure,
dreamlike, charming, that always passes.

Oh, never give your heart all at once,
for no matter what sweetness lips may show,
hearts are like dice in a game,
thrown in play.
And how could one ever win in the game
that love has made deaf, mute, and blind?
Whoever has tried knows the cost and the struggle,
for they gave their whole heart and lost.
