Sacked after failing to qualify Romania for the World Cup, coach Mircea Lucescu suffers cardiac arrest

Renowned Romanian coach Mircea Lucescu is reported to have suffered a heart attack this morning (April 3), while still at the University Hospital and preparing to be discharged after several medical check-ups.

The 80-year-old head coach of the Romanian national team and father of Răzvan Lucescu had been admitted to this hospital following a fainting episode last Sunday morning (March 29), when he collapsed during training.

However, today, while he was walking on his own in the morning, he was transferred on a stretcher to intensive care due to high blood pressure. Thanks to the immediate intervention of doctors, his life was saved.

According to local media, the coach underwent primary angioplasty and his condition is currently stable. He remains under close monitoring by specialist doctors.

“This morning, the patient suffered an acute myocardial infarction. He was transported urgently and immediately received the necessary medical and therapeutic interventions, in accordance with current protocols,” the University Hospital (SUUB) announced.

Lucescu had been dismissed just hours earlier from his position as Romania’s head coach after failing to qualify the national team for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, which will be held in the United States, Mexico, and Canada during the summer.
