The final hours of negotiations to change the venue of the 2026 Finalissima, which was initially planned to be played on March 27 in Doha, have resulted in the decision to move the match to Spain, specifically to Santiago Bernabéu Stadium, which is currently the leading favorite to host the clash.
According to information from the Spanish outlet Diario AS, the stadium of Real Madrid CF has been chosen to host the match between Argentina national football team and Spain national football team — a duel that represents the confrontation between the champions of South America and the champions of Europe.
It is a match of global importance that will be held in what is considered the best possible setting, in the capital of Spain, and in the stadium that could also host the final of the 2030 FIFA World Cup.
Recent events in Doha, which has been threatened by drones and ballistic missiles, made it impossible to hold the Finalissima and five other matches included in the Qatar Football Festival, including the friendly match between Spain national football team and Egypt national football team.
For this reason, the cancellation clause was activated.
Although other alternatives such as Rome and Lisbon had been mentioned, both UEFA and CONMEBOL consider Madrid and the “Bernabéu” as the best solution for an event of this level.
The decision has essentially been finalized, with only a few minor details related to security and logistics remaining. At the same time, space and opportunities have also been found to organize the other scheduled matches.
Security remains the priority
The fact that on the same date, March 27, the match between Morocco national football team and Ecuador national football team will also take place in Madrid at Metropolitano Stadium means that security and police measures must be coordinated and approved with the relevant authorities.
The Spanish capital has the capacity to host two events of this magnitude on the same day, but the planning and deployment of security forces must be carefully organized and detailed.
The “Bernabéu” previously hosted the emergency final of the 2018 Copa Libertadores Finals after incidents in Buenos Aires during the second leg between River Plate and Boca Juniors.
At that time, despite having very little preparation time, the organization turned out to be a complete success, which is considered a strong guarantee for the institutions involved.
For reference, Spain national football team last played at the Bernabéu in 2024 in a friendly against Brazil national football team (3–3), while the last match between Argentina national football team and “La Roja” took place in Madrid as well, at the Metropolitano Stadium in 2018, where Spain won 6–1. ⚽
