BallinaWorld of LiteraturePoem by John Yamrus

Poem by John Yamrus

two weeks before Christmas, and

i was out of a job,
which wasn’t as bad
as it sounds
because the presents were all bought
and the house was paid for and
Kathy still had her job.

the worst part of it all
was telling the neighbors
and relatives and
friends.

you know,
the whole blah blah blah
of how did it happen
and what did you do?

it’s kind of like when someone dies
and you keep going over and over
those last details
about how she must have been sure
she was going that day
because
she didn’t say “so long”
like she always did…

she said
“good-bye”.

i’m sure that
there are worse things
than being out of a job,
only right now
i just can’t
name
one.
