Poem by Pem’za Peso:

it’s good you don’t
live with me
I’d quarrel with the glass you drink from
because it touched the corner of your lips
I’d fight with the razor of the rose
that slides along the walnut of your throat
my anger would be seen across the fields

Hey, know this
I’d cut down even the garden trees
so they wouldn’t reach you with their shadows
nor with the drops of rain
I wouldn’t make peace
with those that fell on the places I’ve touched
for the hours you’d be gone
I’d raise the rent
with the doctors in case you fell ill
I’d stir up trouble
even with the tips of your fingers
with the edge of the door
with the holy summer bird
that would fly past you without asking me
I’d be angry with everything

and out of spite
with all those who believe in God
I’d cause a scene
because under my roof
I kiss the divine
day and night

listen, my heart
it’s good you don’t live with me
but within me
