Former Chelsea coach Enzo Maresca chose to give up a £14 million compensation package following a bitter split with the hierarchy of the London club.
According to journalist Martin Lipton, Maresca felt frustrated by the way Chelsea’s board was undermining him, which pushed him to agree to a mutual departure.
The club’s official line described the decision as a “mutual separation,” but in practice it allowed Chelsea to avoid paying the full compensation the coach would have been entitled to under his contract.
Had the club officially dismissed him, Maresca could have claimed around £14 million.
Instead, both parties agreed on a mutual departure, bringing an end to a relationship that was widely seen as tense and dysfunctional.
For Chelsea, this agreement represented significant financial savings, as the coach appeared just as eager to leave the club as the directors were to part ways with him.
