enfica head coach José Mourinho has expressed confidence that his team does not need a miracle to eliminate Real Madrid from the Champions League, as the two sides prepare for the first leg of the play-off tie, which will be played on Tuesday.
Benfica qualified in spectacular fashion from the league phase, with goalkeeper Anatoliy Trubin playing a key role in the 4–2 victory over Real Madrid, securing progression on goal difference. However, Mourinho stressed that his team does not need another “miracle.”
“I don’t think Benfica need a miracle to eliminate Real Madrid. We need to be at our maximum level, almost perfect. Real Madrid are Real Madrid: history, experience, ambition… The only comparable thing is that both clubs are big. Football has its own power, and we can win,” Mourinho said.
He added that he expects to face the main favourites to win the trophy and a stronger opponent compared to the last meeting in Lisbon.
Mourinho also spoke about his connection with Real Madrid, a club he managed for three years at the Bernabéu, winning one LaLiga title and one Copa del Rey.
“I gave everything to Real Madrid. I did good things and made mistakes, but I gave everything. When you leave with those feelings, the connection lasts forever,” he said, dismissing any speculation about a possible return, as he still has one year left on his contract with Benfica.
Mourinho emphasized that motivation will be the key factor in the match.
“Beating Real Madrid once is very difficult; beating them twice is even harder. But the most important thing is motivation. I asked the players to play with enjoyment. It’s better to play against a great Real Madrid than against a smaller team. No pressure—let’s enjoy the match and hope for a result that allows us to fight in Madrid,” he concluded.
