The President of the German Football Association (DFB), Bernd Neuendorf, and Vice President Hans-Joachim Watzke will travel to New York this weekend to finalize an agreement with Jurgen Klopp to take over as head coach of the German national team, according to German media reports.
Under the agreement, Klopp will sign a four-year contract that will keep him in charge of the national team until 2030, including the FIFA World Cup scheduled for that year. His annual salary will be slightly higher than Julian Nagelsmann’s current €7 million per year.
The DFB will not pay Red Bull any compensation for Klopp’s early departure from his contract. Instead, Klopp will remain a brand ambassador for the company, a role that Red Bull considers more valuable than receiving a single-digit million-euro compensation fee.
As a reminder, Klopp will succeed Julian Nagelsmann as Germany’s head coach following the national team’s disappointing FIFA World Cup campaign, which ended with a Round of 16 elimination at the hands of Paraguay. Nagelsmann has been in charge since 2023.
Klopp returns to coaching after leaving Liverpool two years ago. During his time away from the touchline, he served as Head of Global Football for the Red Bull group.
It is almost certain that Klopp’s coaching staff will include his long-time assistants Peter Krawietz and Pepijn Lijnders. Several other potential members of his backroom staff have also reportedly contacted him in recent days.
