Liverpool’s Madness: Almost €35 Million for an 18-Year-Old Goalkeeper

Liverpool have made one of the most eye-catching investments of the summer in a young player, officially completing the signing of Belgian goalkeeper Lucca Brughmans from KRC Genk in a deal that could reach up to €35 million including bonuses.

The Reds have signed Brughmans on a long-term contract, but the 18-year-old goalkeeper will not travel to England immediately. He will remain at Genk for the entire 2026/27 season on loan before joining Liverpool in the summer of 2027.

The transfer fee is what has attracted the most attention. The deal is reportedly worth around €35 million, including bonuses. This is an exceptionally high fee for an 18-year-old goalkeeper, especially considering his still limited experience in professional football.

Brughmans is a product of Genk’s academy and made his first-team debut last season. He had previously made 32 appearances for the club’s reserve team, and after earning his place in the senior squad, he continued to feature regularly in the new season.

Liverpool see Brughmans as an investment for the future. The English club have decided to pay a substantial fee for a goalkeeper who has yet to build an extensive senior career, believing that he could become one of the pillars of the team in the years to come.

The fact that Liverpool have allowed the goalkeeper to remain at Genk for another season clearly shows that the transfer has been planned with a long-term perspective in mind. Brughmans will continue to gain valuable playing time and develop in Belgian football before arriving at Anfield in the summer of 2027.
