Liverpool midfielder Alexis Mac Allister has praised the impact of new manager Andoni Iraola, highlighting how the Spanish coach’s arrival has brought significant changes to the team.
Iraola took charge of the Reds in June, replacing Arne Slot, who had guided Liverpool to the Premier League title in the 2024/25 season. However, the team failed to maintain the same level of performance in the following campaign.
Under their new manager, Liverpool have shown encouraging signs of improvement. In Iraola’s first 11 matches in charge, the team have recorded seven wins, three draws and just one defeat.
Their latest victory came in the Champions League, where Liverpool secured a thrilling 4-3 win over Villarreal after a spectacular comeback. Mac Allister was one of the main protagonists, scoring twice, while Iraola deployed him in a more advanced midfield role.
Speaking after the match, the Argentine midfielder opened up about the difficulties of last season and the changes brought about by the new manager.
“Last year was really difficult for all of us. It is clear that I wasn’t at my best, and I am the first to admit that. I have no problem saying it. Something wasn’t working properly within the group, and this manager has changed that,” Mac Allister said.
The midfielder explained that Liverpool’s style of play has changed under Iraola, emphasising the importance of the new atmosphere within the squad.
“It is really important. The way we play is quite different. I don’t like making comparisons, but I feel good now, and that is what I like,” he added.
Mac Allister’s comments suggest that the changes under Iraola are not limited to results but also extend to how the players feel within the squad.
Liverpool will be looking to maintain their positive momentum in domestic and European competitions, while their performance against Villarreal and Mac Allister’s brace have further boosted optimism for the remainder of the season.
