David Beckham has thrown his support behind Lionel Messi in the race for the Ballon d’Or, stating that the Argentine superstar deserves to win the award for the ninth time in his career.
Messi was the star of Inter Miami’s 2-0 victory over Cruz Azul in the Campeones Cup, scoring the opening goal and providing an assist for Casemiro to seal the win. For the Argentine, it was his 100th goal for Inter Miami in all competitions.
Following the victory, Inter Miami co-owner David Beckham included Messi among the serious contenders for the Ballon d’Or, praising his performances despite his age.
“When you see him doing things like that, when you look at the World Cup he had, there is nobody at 39 years old doing what he does and performing at that level,” Beckham said.
The English legend went even further in his praise for the Argentine star.
“He deserves to be considered for the Ballon d’Or. In my opinion, he should win it,” Beckham stated.
Messi, who has won the trophy eight times, is included on the 30-player shortlist for the 2026 edition.
The Ballon d’Or ceremony will take place on October 26 in London, with Messi expected to attend the prestigious event.
