Manchester United manager Michael Carrick has said he is not surprised to still be in charge of the team despite the poor results and widespread criticism. He stressed that he remains focused on his work and does not need assurances from the club’s hierarchy about his future.
Manchester United are going through a difficult period, having failed to win any of their last eight matches. Sunday’s defeat to Bournemouth left the team just one point above the Premier League relegation zone.
In the twelve matches played in all competitions this season, United have recorded just two victories. Meanwhile, they have collected only seven points from their first eight league games, their worst tally at this stage of a season in the past forty years.
Despite the pressure and speculation surrounding his potential dismissal, Carrick has insisted that he remains determined to turn the team’s fortunes around.
“I’m here to do the best I can for the team. I desperately want us to become a better team and improve things. So, I’m not surprised that I’m still in this position,” Carrick said on Thursday.
He added that he does not need public backing or assurances from the club’s owners or director of football, Jason Wilcox.
“I don’t need assurances from anyone. I understand my position, my job and the responsibility that comes with this role,” the English manager stated.
Carrick also defended captain Bruno Fernandes, who was left out of the starting line-up for the defeat against Bournemouth. The Portuguese midfielder was dropped to the bench after criticising the manager’s tactics following the 4-1 defeat to Como.
However, Carrick stressed that he has no concerns about Fernandes’ commitment to the club and believes he will continue to lead the team.
“Bruno is someone who has led the team very well in many matches over many years. He will continue to do that,” Carrick said.
