Leo Messi continues to bid farewell to his fans on social media. This time, however, his brief and understated message focuses more on an image — the one that went viral around the world during El Clásico at the Santiago Bernabéu in the 2016–17 season.
In that match, which Barcelona won 3–2 thanks to Messi’s last-gasp winner, Leo took off his shirt, held it up towards the sky, and displayed it to the fans of their eternal rivals. The celebration went down in history as one of the most unforgettable moments of the Argentine superstar’s career, Marca reports.
Now, almost ten years later, Leo has recreated the same celebration on his Instagram account, but this time wearing Argentina’s sky-blue and white colours. He proudly displays his shirt, which features the word “Thank You” above the number 10 instead of his name.
The image was accompanied by another message that went straight to the hearts of Argentine fans:
“Everything has been said. And now, everything has been done. And the only words that come from my heart are: Thank you, Argentina.”
