Barcelona have stepped up their pursuit of Moroccan midfielder Azzedine Ounahi from Girona as the Catalan club looks to fill the void left by the long-term absence of Frenkie de Jong.
The Dutch midfielder is expected to be sidelined for three to four months after suffering a medial collateral ligament (MCL) tear in his right knee.
According to Spanish TV program El Chiringuito, Barcelona’s hierarchy are seriously considering a move for the 26-year-old Moroccan international. De Jong’s injury has left the midfield short of options, while the possible departure of Marc Casadó has further increased the need for reinforcement.
Girona, who were relegated from La Liga to Spain’s second division, are demanding €25 million, the same amount as Ounahi’s release clause.
Barcelona are not the only club interested in the Moroccan midfielder. Reports also suggest that Ajax, now managed by his former coach Míchel, are closely monitoring the situation.
Meanwhile, sporting director Deco is under pressure to complete the deal, with Barcelona’s midfield options currently limited to Pedri, Gavi, and Marc Bernal as the new season rapidly approaches.
Despite Girona’s relegation, Ounahi enjoyed an impressive individual campaign. He scored five goals and provided two assists in 24 league appearances, establishing himself as one of the team’s standout performers.
An injury prevented the Moroccan international from facing Barcelona in either of last season’s two meetings, despite being one of Míchel’s key players.
Although Ounahi is naturally a more attack-minded midfielder who can also operate as an attacking midfielder or on the wing, Barcelona believe he has the right profile to fill the gap created by De Jong’s lengthy absence.
