Château du Nozet is an extraordinarily beautiful castle located in Pouilly-sur-Loire, France. Château du Nozet sits at the bottom of a small valley that opens directly onto the Loire River. This castle, which controlled the old Roman road on the right bank of the Loire near Pouilly-sur-Loire, has been rebuilt or remodeled several times.
The 1839 land registry shows several buildings constructed on a plot 50 meters long and 40 meters wide. Today, only the south and east wings remain. It is believed to have been rebuilt first before the French Revolution and then again in the mid-19th century for Count Lafont de la Doucette in the Neo-Renaissance style.
It comprises two rectangular wings arranged in an L-shape. The building is topped with towers with slate roofs. It is flanked at each of its northeast and southeast corners by a large round tower with a false machicolation and a pepperpot roof, a chamfered tower in the center of the park-facing facade surmounted by a spire and a lantern at the southwest corner, and an attached corbelled turret on a molded base. Three other turrets, two to the west and one at a re-entrant angle.
The lands and the manor house of Le Nozet were gifted in 1234 to the Benedictines of La Charité-sur-Loire, who had become the temporal lords of Pouilly following a donation made by Humbault le Blanc before he departed for the Crusades. The château fell into ruin and was rebuilt several times; it was reconstructed for the last time in 1651.
During the Revolution, the château became national property. In 1798, Étienne Louis Lafond, a Parisian wine merchant, acquired the estate. During the First World War, the Château du Nozet was made available to the French Red Cross by Count and Countess Lafond to serve as Auxiliary Hospital No. 17. With a capacity of 20 to 40 beds, it treated the wounded from August 1914 until June 1918. In 1972, Baron Patrick de Ladoucette grandson of Guillaume des Rotours became the first member of his family to dedicate himself exclusively to the production of “Pouilly” wine from Pouilly-sur-Loire.
