Veteran Bosnian striker Edin Džeko has signed a one-year contract extension with Schalke.
The German club announced the news on Monday after the 40-year-old played a crucial role in helping the team secure promotion back to the Bundesliga last season.
Džeko joined Schalke as a free agent in January and scored six goals in 11 Bundesliga 2 matches, helping the club return to Germany’s top flight after a three-year absence.
“Winning promotion to the Bundesliga is one of the greatest moments of my career. It was something truly special. Football has always motivated me, and I still have the hunger to succeed. I want to help the team in the Bundesliga as well,” Džeko said.
The Bosnia and Herzegovina captain from the most recent FIFA World Cup could make his first Bundesliga appearance in 15 years when Schalke begin their league campaign away to Augsburg on August 30.
During his distinguished career, Džeko has also played for Wolfsburg, Manchester City, Roma, Inter Milan, and Fenerbahçe.
