Sir Alex Ferguson’s Emotional Letter to Cristiano Ronaldo Following His Retirement from International Football

Cristiano,

I don’t know if you will ever fully understand just how much you have meant to football, to Manchester United, to Portugal and, above all, to me.

When you first walked into my office as a young lad from Sporting Lisbon, I saw something special. I saw a hunger for success, confidence, courage, and a young boy who believed he could become the best in the world. But even I could never have imagined the heights you would go on to reach.

I remember that young boy who wanted to take on every defender, who stayed behind in training long after everyone else had left, and who was never satisfied with simply being good enough. Sometimes I had to remind you that football was a team game, but I never wanted to extinguish that fire burning inside you.

Today, as you close another chapter of your international career, I want you to know that you have given your country something that cannot be measured in goals or trophies.

You gave Portugal belief. You carried the hopes of millions of people on your shoulders, you cried for your country, you fought for your country, and in the end, you gave them a European Championship. You made an entire generation believe that nothing was impossible.

I have watched you grow from that young and talented boy into a man who has challenged the limits of this beautiful game. And I must tell you something: I am proud of you.

People will debate who was the greatest. They will compare your records, trophies and achievements. But when I look at you, I don’t just see a footballer. I see a young boy who refused to give up on his dreams.

You may say goodbye to international football, but you will never say goodbye to the memories you have given us.

And if I could speak to that 18-year-old boy I brought to Manchester all those years ago, I would tell him just one thing:

‘You have no idea how many lives you are going to touch.’

But there is something I must say. I don’t believe your international journey should have ended this way. A player who has given so much to his country deserves a far greater tribute and a much more fitting farewell. You deserved to walk away while an entire nation celebrated your extraordinary contribution to Portuguese football.

Portugal owes you more than just a goodbye, Cristiano. You deserve a farewell fit for a king.

Thank you, Cristiano. It was an honour to be your manager, but it was an even greater privilege to watch you become the man you are today.

You will always be my boy, Cristiano.”
