Zanetti on Messi’s Farewell: Another Genius After Maradona

Javier Zanetti has spoken emotionally about the match that is expected to mark another special moment in Lionel Messi’s career with the Argentina national team.

The former Albiceleste captain and current Inter vice-president recalled Messi’s early days with the national team, describing the Argentine superstar as a shy but extraordinary footballer.

The friendly between Argentina and Benin, scheduled for October 7 at the Monumental Stadium, is expected to be a special evening dedicated to Messi, who has written one of the most glorious chapters in the history of Argentine football.

“He didn’t speak much. He was very young, but phenomenal. I remember an event in Rosario, where Maxi Rodríguez and I organized a charity match at the Newell’s Old Boys stadium. There were around 40,000 people, and they were all there for him. He was always willing to take part and very sensitive to events like that. That says a lot about his character,” Zanetti said.

He recalled that from the very beginning, it was clear Messi would become an extraordinary figure for the national team.

“From the very first training session, we realized that he was different. It was clear that he was going to achieve great things with our national team. After Diego, another genius was born in our country. It is incredible,” the former Argentina captain said.

Zanetti, who played 37 matches alongside Messi for Argentina, also highlighted the strong relationship they have always shared.

“I have always had a very good relationship with him, based on mutual respect. I hope that during this event he experiences all the emotions he deserves and receives all the love of the Argentine people.”

Zanetti ultimately placed Messi and Diego Maradona in a special category in the history of Argentine football, insisting that the two legends should not be compared.

“He has given everything, and for that he deserves our respect. Messi has managed to unite an entire nation, just like Maradona. Don’t compare them. They are both the essence of football and, thankfully, they were both born in Argentina.”

“I want to thank Messi for all the emotions he has given us and for the way he has represented us around the world,” Zanetti concluded.
